Three, four years in, and suddenly everything from opening File Explorer to clicking the Start menu has this faint half-second lag, and the mind jumps straight to “I guess it’s time for a new one.” I used to think the same thing, until I actually sat down and traced where the slowdown was coming from. In almost every case, the machine was fine. Windows had just quietly buried it under years of clutter nobody ever goes looking for.

Fixing that clutter doesn’t take new hardware. It takes an afternoon, a bit of patience with Settings menus, and knowing which of the dozen “speed up your PC” tips floating around the internet are actually worth your time versus which ones are recycled nonsense from 2015.

Free Up the Drive Before Anything Else

If your C: drive is sitting above 85-90% full, stop reading the rest of this and deal with that first. Everything else on this list matters less when Windows doesn’t have room to breathe. It needs free space for virtual memory, update staging, and temp files, and once that space disappears, the whole system starts feeling sluggish in ways that have nothing to do with your processor.

Turn on Storage Sense under Settings > System > Storage and set it to run automatically. That handles ongoing maintenance. For a one-time deep clean, search for Disk Cleanup, pick your main drive, and don’t stop at the default list. Click “Clean up system files” as well. That second pass is the one that actually finds old Windows Update leftovers and previous installation folders, and on a machine that hasn’t been cleaned in a year or two, I’ve seen that recover anywhere from a few gigabytes to well over ten.

Mechanical hard drive owners should still run a defrag pass after this. SSD owners should skip it. TRIM handles that automatically, and manually defragging an SSD does nothing except waste its write cycles.

The Startup List Is Doing More Damage Than You Think

Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, click over to Startup, and sort by impact. You will almost certainly find things there you never asked to launch on boot: a chat app, a cloud sync client, a manufacturer utility bundled in from day one, maybe a game launcher you installed once and forgot about.

Disabling something here doesn’t uninstall it. It just tells Windows not to load it automatically; you can still open it whenever you want. On my own setup this pass alone knocked a noticeable chunk off boot time, mostly because those first couple minutes after login are already busy. Windows is loading services, checking updates, and indexing files, and every extra program fighting for the same window makes it worse.

While you’re in Settings, go to Apps > Installed Apps, click the three dots next to anything you barely open, and set its background permission to “Never.” Streaming and social apps are the usual offenders. Nothing wrong with using them, but there’s no reason for them to sit running in the background between sessions.

Game Mode Is On Whether You Game or Not

Windows turns Game Mode on by default for every install, and it reserves system resources in anticipation of a game that, for a lot of people, doesn’t exist on the machine at all. I only found out how much of a difference this makes after a friend asked why their laptop, used strictly for spreadsheets and email, felt heavier than it should for what it was doing. Game Mode was on. Turning it off under Settings > Gaming didn’t transform the machine, but it was a measurable, noticeable improvement for zero cost.

Trim the Visuals, Keep What You Actually Use

Search “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” from the Start menu. You can go all-in with “Adjust for best performance,” or pick your fights manually. I leave font smoothing and thumbnail previews on because I’d notice their absence, but window animations and taskbar transparency get killed without a second thought. That’s a fair trade on almost any machine without a dedicated GPU.

Power plans matter more than people assume too, especially on desktops. Head to Settings > Power & Battery > Power Mode and switch from Balanced to Best Performance. It costs nothing on a machine that’s always plugged in, and app launches feel noticeably snappier, particularly on newer Intel or Ryzen chips. Laptop owners should reserve this setting for when they’re plugged in. It drains a battery fast and runs hot on the go.

Two Settings Almost Nobody Touches

Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling, tucked under Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings, hands part of the rendering workload directly to your GPU instead of routing it through the CPU. If you’ve got a dedicated graphics card and do anything visually demanding (video editing, multiple monitors, creative work), it’s worth switching on and restarting to check the difference.

Then there’s the registry change, which sounds scarier than it is. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, there’s a value called MenuShowDelay, defaulted to 400 milliseconds. Set it to 0 and every right-click menu and flyout in Windows opens instantly instead of with that faint hesitation. It’s a small fix, but it’s the kind you notice every single time afterward, which is more than most of the flashier tweaks on this list can claim.

Don’t Ignore Drivers or Basic Hardware Health

Outdated graphics drivers cause more subtle slowdown than people give them credit for. Grab updates straight from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel’s own tools instead of waiting on Windows Update, which doesn’t always ship the newest builds. Check your motherboard manufacturer’s site for chipset and storage drivers while you’re at it.

It’s also worth running the built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic occasionally, particularly if a machine feels randomly unstable rather than consistently slow. It’s a ten-minute test that runs before Windows even boots, and it can catch a failing RAM stick on a computer that everyone assumed had simply reached the end of its life. Replacing one cheap RAM module has fixed problems that looked, on the surface, like they needed a whole new PC.

One thing to actively avoid: all-in-one “PC booster” and registry cleaner apps. Modern Windows doesn’t meaningfully benefit from registry cleaning, and the risk of breaking something outweighs whatever tiny gain they promise. “RAM optimizer” tools are worse than useless. They force data out of RAM that Windows immediately has to reload, which just makes things marginally slower while pretending to help.

When It’s Actually a Hardware Problem

Sometimes none of this is enough, and that’s a fair thing to accept. If you’re running 8GB of RAM or less, you’re hitting a ceiling constantly. Windows starts swapping data to your storage drive as virtual memory, which is dramatically slower than real RAM. 16GB clears up most everyday multitasking complaints; 32GB is worth it if you’re juggling a dozen browser tabs alongside real work. Check your current RAM type and free slots before buying anything, so you don’t end up with the wrong kit.

If you’re still on a spinning hard drive, that’s the one upgrade to prioritize above everything else on this list. Moving to an NVMe SSD changes boot times, file transfers, and app launches more than any software tweak could touch. And if the machine is simply old enough that piecing together upgrades costs more than it’s worth, retiring it is sometimes the more honest call than sinking money in gradually.

Is Windows 11 Just Heavier Than Windows 10?

Somewhat, yes. It idles at a higher baseline memory footprint, and some of its default security features cost a small performance percentage on certain setups. That explains a lot of the day-to-day sluggishness people notice after upgrading, rather than anything actually being broken. And disabling startup programs is completely safe either way. Nothing gets deleted, and you can turn anything back on later.

Leave your antivirus and any hardware utility you genuinely depend on alone. Everything else here is fair game, and most of it takes minutes, not hours.
